iPhone Speaker Sounds Muffled: Find the Cause First
Muffled sound has five likely causes and they need five different fixes. Ten minutes of testing beats an hour of guessing.

Which speaker is it?
An iPhone plays stereo through two openings: the loudspeaker at the bottom edge and the earpiece slot above the screen. They fail for different reasons, so name the one that is muffled before anything else.
- Calls sound distant, music is fine. That is the earpiece. Look at your screen protector and at the narrow slot above the screen.
- Music and the speakerphone are dull, calls held to your ear are fine. That is the bottom loudspeaker. Look for lint or moisture.
- Everything is dull. Look at settings and at the audio route before you look at hardware.
The fastest way to separate them is a tone sent to one side at a time, which is what the speaker test does.
Five causes, in the order worth checking

The settings checklist
Run this before you decide the hardware is at fault. Any one of these can imitate a dying speaker.
- Audio is still going somewhere else. Car stereo, earbuds in a pocket, a speaker in the next room. Check the audio route in Control Center.
- Reduce Loud Sounds. Settings, Sounds and Haptics, Headphone Safety. This one limits headphone output, not the built in speaker, so it explains quiet earbuds rather than a quiet phone. Rule it out if the complaint is about headphones.
- A volume limit or a low media volume. Ringer volume and media volume are separate.
- Restart the phone. A stuck audio route survives an app switch but not a restart. Free, thirty seconds, and it does sometimes fix it.
- A case with a deep lip or a fabric edge. Some cases fold sound back into the grille.
Test each side in a couple of seconds
Water Eject plays a 660 Hz tone through the left, then the right, so you can hear which side is affected. It also carries the low pulsed tone for water and a 2.2 kHz tone for dust.

If cleaning changes nothing
A speaker that plays cleanly but quietly is usually obstructed. A speaker that distorts, buzzes at volume or drops out is usually damaged, and no tone or brush will bring it back. At that point compare both sides once more, note exactly what you hear, and take that description to a repair appointment. A clear symptom saves diagnostic time.
If the muffling followed water and the phone also shows a liquid detection alert or will not charge, work through the first hour checklist instead.

Why does my iPhone speaker suddenly sound muffled?
In rough order of how often it turns out to be the cause: a case or screen protector covering the speaker holes, pocket lint packed into the grille mesh, moisture after a splash or a steamy bathroom, a volume or audio setting, audio still routed to a Bluetooth device, and last, real damage to the speaker.
How do I know if my iPhone speaker is broken or just dirty?
Play a tone through one side at a time. A dirty or wet speaker is quieter and duller but still plays the tone cleanly. A damaged one usually rattles, buzzes, distorts at volume, or stays silent no matter what. If one side is completely silent while the other is fine, and cleaning changes nothing, treat it as hardware.
Can a screen protector make the earpiece sound muffled?
Yes, and it is one of the most common causes. A protector that is slightly misaligned, or one whose cutout is too small, sits over the earpiece slot at the top of the screen. Calls sound distant while the loudspeaker at the bottom sounds normal. Peel back one corner and listen before you go any further.
